When you begin researching travel system strollers to find the right solution for your family’s lifestyle, there are quite a few factors to consider. However, the most critical consideration when choosing between car seat and travel systems strollers is the safety of your child. While all car seats and travel system strollers on the market meet the minimum safety standards and testing requirements by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some include a few extra features to keep your little bundle of joy safe and comfortable. And while some of these features add a significant amount of weight to the car seat itself, this is not the case with every product.
Peg Perego has been producing high-quality carriages and strollers since 1949. With roots in Italy, the company is know for churning out stylish products manufactured to exacting standards. And in recent years, they have become very well-known for their thorough safety features integrated into their infant car seat and base combination units.
What’s So Great About the Si?
The Peg Perego Primo Viaggio infant car seats and Si Series travel system strollers offer style and incredible functionality along with unparalleled attention to safety. This particular travel system includes the Primo Viaggio car seat, the car seat base, as well as the Si stroller. The car seat weighs in at 18.2 pounds, while the Si strollers tips the scales at a scant 13.2 pounds. Considering Peg Perego’s ability to include added safety features in one of the lightest travel system strollers on the market, the Si and Primo Viaggio system are a wonderful unit to consider for everyday use.
The Primo Viaggio car seat is secured into the Si stroller unit using a patented strap system which helps to reduce some of the weight of the stroller itself. The Si also boasts 6.5 inches of suspension for each wheel as well as 12 ball bearings in the hubs of the stroller wheels, which offers an incredibly comfortable ride for your child and easy one-handed navigation for you as a parent.
The Si includes a roomy cargo basket to fit all of your infant’s needs while you’re on the go as well as a full sun and rain canopy which can be easily retracted. The handlebar unit can be adjusted to various height settings, making it a comfortable unit to push for those moms and dads who may prefer different settings. The Si is also incredibly compact compared to many travel system strollers when folded up and the mechanism used for opening and closing this stroller is a breeze to use.
The strongest feature of this particular unit is the Side Impact Protection, or SIP, which is integrated into the Primo Viaggio car seat itself. This feature not only provides great lateral protection for your child, but also offers comfort as it prevents them from straining their little neck once they nod off and rest their head against the side of the car seat’s interior.
What’s Not So Great?
For starters, the Si and Primo Viaggio combination is not the least expensive among travel system strollers on the market. The additional safety features and light weight of the stroller unit come at a bit of a premium. However, that being said there is some peace of mind knowing that your child has added protection when riding in the car.
Additionally, some parents have expressed concern about the straps used for fastening the car seat into the base. While they are considered to be a very safe method of securing the car seat, as parents many of us have become accustomed to the “click” of standard mechanical latching systems. Again, this is one of the features which helps to reduce some of the weight of the car seat to make it easier to manage, but it does take a little getting used to.
